Salmonella Typhi Infection - A Complete Guide to Salmonella Typhi

Salmonella typhi:  The Cause of Typhoid Fever

Salmonella typhi is a rod-shaped, gram-negative bacterium responsible for causing typhoid fever, a serious systemic infection. This disease mainly affects people in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water.

Characteristics of Salmonella typhi:

  1. It is a motile bacterium, equipped with flagella that help it move.
  2. It belongs to the species Salmonella enterica, serotype Typhi.
  3. It can survive and multiply inside human cells, particularly within macrophages.

Transmission:

  • Salmonella typhi spreads primarily through the fecal-oral route. This means the bacteria are excreted in the feces of infected individuals and can contaminate.
  • Drinking water.
  • Food items washed or prepared with contaminated water.
  • Milk and dairy products.
  • People get infected by ingesting these contaminated sources, especially in areas lacking proper hygiene and sanitation.

Pathogenesis:

Once ingested, Salmonella typhi passes through the stomach to the intestines, where it invades the intestinal lining. It then enters the bloodstream, spreading throughout the body and causing symptoms like:
  • High fever
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

Prevent:

  • Ensure access to clean, safe drinking water.
  • Practice good hygiene, such as regular hand washing.
  • Properly cook food and avoid raw or unwashed produce.
  • Vaccination is available in many countries to prevent typhoid fever.
